Even if you try to imagine it, you can’t. I’m always watching to make sure I don’t make waves, trying to fit in.

I’m keenly aware of how I’ll never have what you have. I’ll never be able to make the cheerleading team and not wonder if I’m just the token. In the same situation, you assume that you’re just the most talented person. Do you see the difference? I always have to wonder at people’s motives. And I have to try to ignore half the things people say when they’re not thinking. Otherwise I’d be mad all the time.

Don’t you think it made me mad the other day when you made fun of how that girl talked at the mall the other day? (Beat.) Oh, please, you know what I’m talking about. She was black. And from the city. You said you couldn’t understand a word she said and why can’t people learn to speak English. Maybe she doesn’t have the advantages you have. Maybe you shouldn’t be critical when you have no idea what you’re talking about. (Beat.) I know you’re not trying to be rude, Ginny, but maybe you ought to step inside someone else’s shoes once in a while.
